Spetses is one of the Saronic islands, easily accessible from Athens and hence quite appreciated from Athenians even for a stay over a weekend. You can find informations for instance on

Note that the workshop will coincide with the Armata Festival, which commemorates a naval battle between Greek and Ottoman ships during the Greek War of Independence. This year it coincides moreover with the 200 year anniversary of the Independence. The festival will culminate on the Saturday following the end of the workshop, see more here:

If you would like to extend your stay before or after the workshop in Athens, obviously there would be many things to visit there and Athens city center is very well connected by public transportations to both the airport and Piraeus port. See for instance:

At last, if you would like to explore Pelopponese mainland, it is possible to cross by boat towards Kosta or Porto Heli (see for instance https://www.hellenicseaways.gr/en-gb Spetses -> Porto Heli). It is possible to rent cars in both places, but be careful to choose a company that would also have an agency at the aiport and allow you to give back the car there on your way back. If you are in the area, one of the most interesting place to visit, especially for physicists, is the ancient theater of Epidaurus with its remarkable acoustic:
